Damon Daniel, President
Damon Daniel answered the call to join AdHoc Group Against Crime on Monday, February 23rd 2015. Mr. Daniel is a native of Kansas City, MO and brings with him a wide range of experience within the field of social justice that spans 20 years.
His work background ranges from promoting bullying prevention programs in schools, to directing the community organizing efforts of one of Kansas City’s most effective grassroots leadership development and community organizing entities in the region. Over the last 8 years, Damon galvanized faith communities to address socioeconomic issues particularly those that perpetuate the dehumanization of people of color.
Through his work with elected officials, neighborhood leaders, and community groups, employment opportunities for returning citizens in Kansas City, KS and MO has increased and concrete programs have been developed in target neighborhoods to reduce violence and stabilize neighborhoods.
Damon served as the lead convener of a multi-sectored, racial and generational network of stakeholders called KC Regional Equity Network. His leadership empowered the unified vision and voices of regional organizing efforts, to work collaboratively to achieve policies that promote equity and inclusive prosperity in Kansas City metropolitan area. Damon is a graduate of the University of Missouri Kansas City with a degree in Urban Affairs, with an emphasis in community and social services and non-profit management.
Most recently, Missouri Governor Jay Nixon appointed Mr. Daniel to the 16th Circuit Judicial Commission. The 16th Circuit Judicial Commission helps fill judicial vacancies, pursuant to the Missouri Nonpartisan Court Plan, in Jackson County.

Alicia Jones, LPC – Manager of Family Support Services
Alicia is a Licensed Professional Counselor in the state of Missouri and a Certified Clinical Trauma Professional.
Alicia started her career in public health in 2004, where she provided education and counseling on various topics such as sexuality, diseases, and HIV/AIDS. In 2009 she took this expertise to the mental health field and began working with groups, couples, young adults and children who desired additional support in life.
As a Licensed Professional Counselor, Alicia is dedicated to providing realistic and healthy ways to help others improve their life. Because she has had life experiences that have changed her journey from one direction to another she is able to meet clients where they are in their personal journey and support them with establishing the best possible solutions for them.
Alicia is Co-Owner of a private practice by the name of A Life’s Journey and a Therapist working with victims of trauma and homicide at the AdHoc Group Against Crime.
Beth Falkenstein, Administrative and Communications Coordinator
Beth grew up in Olathe, but has lived, worked and worshipped all over the metro area. After attending Kansas State University, and receiving a Bachelor’s in Family Studies, she spent a life-changing year in Chicago working with Mission Year. This intense, urban ministry experience, focused on love and justice in the city, shattered many of Beth’s world-views and gave her a new lens with which to view her hometown of Kansas City.
A few years after returning home, she began working with urban youth and obtained a Master’s in Urban Studies/Youth Development from Eastern University. Beth has a range of experience from administrative human resource functions to developing and implementing programs that equipped high school students to become leaders and work as change agents in their communities. She is honored to bring this experience to AdHoc, and work for healing and justice in Kansas City.
Jeanine Crookshank, Project Manager
Jeanine was born in St. Louis; raised in Kansas City where she attended one of the few African American, private grade schools in the inner city. Shortly after graduating from St. Teresa’s Academy, and two years at CMSU, she moved to St. Louis where she married and raised her children. During these years, she worked in corporations looking for opportunities to effect social change and bring awareness. She was instrumental in building bridges within the Hazelwood School District. While her children were in attendance, she noticed there was a need to bring awareness to the children that did not have a voice in that community. Those children looked like hers.
In 2008, Jeanine moved back to Kansas City, returned to college, and enrolled her son in high school. Again, Jeanine found that the children in her community were disenfranchised and searching for a way to voice their concerns. She teamed with other mothers to work closely with the administration and children of Paseo High School to find their voices and positive social outlets. This encouragement lead to graduates that aspired to college and social productivity. She is still affectionately known as ‘Moms’.
Jeanine holds her Associate, Bachelor’s, and Master’s Degrees in Business Administration. While all her working experience is in corporate America, she has been privileged to watch and work alongside several of Kansas City’s civil rights pioneers from an early age as her father was very active in the community and made these opportunities available to her. It is her desire to continue to be of service to her community and a vessel for healing through her work at AdHoc. She is grateful to have the opportunity to serve.
Branden Mims, Community Resource Advocate
Branden Mims joined Adhoc in June of 2016. He pastors a church located within walking distance to AdHoc’s offices, which is what originally led him to become a volunteer. Originally a native of Atlanta, Branden attended seminary in Dallas, Texas and moved to Kansas City shortly after graduating.
Branden’s heart for community and unique ability to solve problems makes him an excellent fit for his position as an advocate. He coordinates AdHoc’s Trauma Response Team to canvass neighborhoods recently affected by violence, accompanies Damon into the community and schools to facilitate interventions, as well as walks alongside many who reach out to AdHoc for support.
Carolyn Whitney, Community Program Coordinator
Carolyn Whitney works primarily with AdHoc’s Thinking for a Change program, and brings a wealth of experience to the table. She is a substance abuse counselor and certified as a CRADC Counselor. Her experience includes working for Niles Home for Children for approximately 15 years as a Supervisor and the Substance Abuse Coordinator. She worked, and counseled, at the Imani House for over 15 years. Her experience also includes working for the Kansas City Housing Authority Youth Build Program through COMBAT as well as Rediscover Mental Health Services.
Carolyn Whitney is the Founder and President of Sisters In Christ, Inc., a 501-C 3 non- profit organization that has been in existence since 1997. She is driven to make a difference in the lives of women struggling with addiction and abuse issues all while promoting a community of sisterhood worldwide. Through her work with her non-profit, and through Thinking for a Change, she is able to encourage others to continue moving forward in spite of difficult life challenges and obstacles.
Calvin Neal, Group Facilitator
Calvin’s involvement with AdHoc and Mr. Brooks began back in 1984 when Brooks approached him and asked if he would like to come to a meeting of concerned citizens. Neal responded to the first request by saying the people who marched in front of the drug houses were crazy, but of course Brooks did not give up. Brooks continued to invite Neal, which eventually led to him becoming a Board Member and leading the marches alongside Aasim Baheyadeen.
Six years later he was invited to join the staff as a Street Outreach Worker. He has been “AdHocing” ever since. Calvin has vast experience working with different community groups and businesses, as well as a transformational story he is able to share as a Group Facilitator for Thinking for a Change. He is involved in many aspects of AdHoc, and each year he graciously sponsors the annual Mother’s Day Luncheon. Neal was also one of AdHoc’s first honorees at the Community Guardian Awards.
Bishop Frank Douglas, Group Facilitator
Bishop Douglas is a native Kansas Citian. He is an accomplished preacher and teacher with twenty-three years in the pastorate, and currently serves in the Church of God in Christ. Bishop Douglas serves as a group facilitator for Thinking for a Change; a National Institute of Corrections program for offenders and parolees to provide cognitive behavior interventions.
Bishop Douglas also provides behavioral modeling and modification coaching solutions for individuals, groups, businesses, colleges and universities as well as churches under his coach consulting business, the Innovative Seed Group.
Team of Family Support Specialists:
Burton Rogers, LPC – Therapist
Burt grew up in the neighborhood around AdHoc, and always knew he wanted to give back to his community. He chose to do so through providing much-needed therapeutic services to the underserved of Kansas City. He graduated from the University of Missouri-Columbia with a Bachelor’s in Psychology and completed his Master’s in Counseling at Stephens College. Burt made his way back to his old neighborhood to help others, typically working with teenagers and adults who struggle with the strong emotions that come with grief and bereavement.
Kortney Car, LCSW – Therapist
Kortney is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in the state of Missouri, Licensed Master’s Social Worker in the state of Kansas, a Certified Clinical Trauma Professional, and a Counsel on Access to Lethal Means (Calm) Trainer.
Kortney began working in the mental health field in 2004 providing services to youth ages 5-18 years of age. After obtaining her Master’s Degree in Social Work in 2007, Kortney began to provide individual and family therapy services to families engaged in the division of social services as well as youth who had come in contact with the juvenile justice system.
Kortney has years of experience facilitating individual, group, and family therapy services, and working with co-occurring disorders including substance use disorders and eating disorders. Kortney currently wears many hats in the community in order to serve the people. She works in administration at Swope Health Services, is Co-Owner of a private practice by the name of A Life’s Journey, is an Adjunct Professor in the MSW Program at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, and a Therapist working with victims of trauma and homicide at the Ad Hoc Group Against Crime.
